In order to identify congenital diseases (cataracts, retinal tumours – retinoblastoma, glaucoma) and inflammatory diseases the first examination of the child should be done in maternity. The technique of measurement of the autorefractometer is based on dynamic photoskiascopy (infrared radiation). Infrared radiation is harmless to the child’s eyes; it is present in the day light and is invisible to a human eye.
During the examination, the infrared rays are projected onto the retina through the pupil. Depending on the refractive error, the reflected light generates a bright image inside the pupil.
