Treatment of strabismus – surgery or non-surgical treatment, which is the optimal choice?

strabism-tratament-1200x886.jpg

Strabismus is a fairly common ophthalmological condition that manifests itself by the deviation of one or both eyes from the central axis. Surgical treatment is often recommended for strabismus, and some patients tend to believe that this is the ideal solution. However, things are more complicated. Firstly, because in many cases,
after

operation
,
strabismus relapses
. Another important aspect is that strabismus always leads to
amblyopia
deviated eye, and strabismus surgery is only intended to align the axes of the eyes, is purely cosmetic and does not improve vision.

On the positive side, it is possible to opt for a multilateral approach to the problem. For example, an excellent method of developing and recovering “lazy eye” vision is available in our clinic. Optisan Clinic specialists offer both an alternative to

non-judgmental and non-traumatic treatment of strabismus

as well as a complementary form of pre- and post-operative treatment, namely – visual therapy.

What treatment for strabismus may include vision therapy sessions

Vision therapy is used to restore the vision of the amblyopic eye in the case of strabismus combined with amblyopia in the deviated eye (sometimes referred to as “lazy eye”), but also to realign the ocular axes in the case of small or medium-angle strabismus even if central visual acuity is not affected and there is only binocular vision dysfunction.

As I said before, a squint surgeryeven if successful, without recurrence of the problem, provides a good aesthetic result, but does not restore binocular vision. In other words, patients need a post-operative therapy protocol to improve the visual acuity of the operated eye so that later both eyes start working in tandem.

In most cases, strabismus is cured without surgery if it is detected at an early age and the child is taken to an ophthalmologist in time. This is only possible with glasses and vision therapy.

Vision recovery of at least 30% – real results after vision therapy sessions in strabismus

Optisan Clinic in Zalău is one of the few clinics in the country that practices vision therapy for strabismus, and we pride ourselves on it. After more than 10 years of successful clinical application of vision therapy protocols, 98% of patients who have completed the vision therapy programme have improved their visual acuity by at least 30%. In the case of children and teenagers, most of them have recovered their sight 100%.

How long does the process take? Strabismus is a complex condition, and if it is accompanied by amblyopia, recovery can take years. However, if the treatment protocol is applied early, the duration of treatment may be shorter. Throughout the process, all the recommendations of the ophthalmologist must be strictly followed: whether it is optical correction plus vision therapy or surgery plus pre- and post-operative vision therapy. In most cases, treatment with vision therapy lasts between 6 and 18 months.

Another thing we pride ourselves on is that recovery remains stable for life if no other eye conditions are present. So the results are worth the effort. Therapy is more than just exercises for squintingis a real chance to recover normal vision, both aesthetically and functionally.
