Amblyopia children and adults

At the Optisan Clinic, amblyopia (lazy eye disease) is treated through a comprehensive Vision Therapy programme unique in Europe, developed with our colleagues in the USA.

Vision remains stable throughout life (provided the ophthalmologist’s recommendations are followed).

WHAT IS AMBLYOPIA?

Amblyopia or lazy eye disease is a condition characterised by the poor performance of one eye.
Although the eye is anatomically free of damage, the images it transmits to the brain are blurred.

Thus, the brain begins to ignore them and processes only the clear images received from the healthy eye.

CAUSES OF AMBLYOPIA

  • Refractive differences between the two eyes – the eye with the greater refractive error may become amblyopic.
  • Strabismus – if the eyes are not aligned, the image projected onto the retina by the deviated eye will be ignored.
  • Congenital cataract, congenital eyelid ptosis – through lack of visual stimulation.
  • Family history – if a family member has suffered from this condition, there is a risk that the child may also develop amblyopia.
  • Failure to follow the ophthalmologist’s recommendations regarding prescribed treatment and frequency of clinic check-ups.
  • AMBLYOPIA: SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Amblyopia (lazy eye) occurs in childhood. The child doesn’t realise that he can’t see well with one eye, thinking that this is the normal way to see. However, there are some signs that may suggest amblyopia:
    • The eyes do not move at the same time and in the same direction.
    • Difficulties with orientation in space, lack of correct appreciation of distance to objects.
    • The eyes do not fixate on the same point.
    • The child keeps his head turned to one side, especially during close-up activities.
    • The child doesn’t like to write or read (prefers to be read to).
    • No stereoscopic, 3D (cinema) view.
The only way to diagnose amblyopia is by ophthalmological consultation.

    WHAT PATIENTS NEED TO KNOW
    DIAGNOSED WITH AMBLYOPIA

Diagnosed patients should know that amblyopia or lazy eye disease does not go away by itself.

Specialist treatment is needed and is decided following an ophthalmological consultation.
The earlier it is diagnosed, the greater the chance that lazy eye vision can be fully recovered and at significantly lower cost.

    HOW IS AMBLYOPIA TREATED?

At the Optisan Clinic amblyopia is treated using a complex concept of Vision Therapy consisting of pleoptic and orthoptic exercises.

They are intended to train both the eye and the brain and cognitive abilities.

Visual therapy is recommended for both children and adults.
Its effectiveness is high, regardless of age, but exceptional results depend to a great extent on the patient’s involvement, motivation and compliance with the indications and recommendations of specialists.

    HOW THE MEETINGS GO
    OF VISUAL THERAPY?

After the ophthalmologist establishes the treatment protocol, the vision therapy sessions are carried out both in the clinic and at home, with specialist monitoring.

Visual therapy sessions in the clinic are conducted under the guidance and supervision of the therapist. During each session, the specialist adjusts all techniques according to the patient’s needs.

As regards home vision therapy, each patient will receive the information and explanations necessary for their proper conduct, and progress will be monitored by the therapist.

WHAT OTHER CONDITIONS CAN BE TREATED
    WITH VISUAL THERAPY?

Vision Therapy is recommended for people diagnosed with amblyopia (lazy eye), as well as for those with low-grade squint (10-15 degrees), high-grade squint (combined pre- and post-operative therapy) and other binocular vision disorders.

    WHAT ARE THE RESULTS
    VISUAL THERAPY?

More than 1500 patients with amblyopia and strabismus have been successfully treated so far at Optisan Clinic.

Patients aged 5 to 56 years achieved an improvement in visual acuity of at least 30%. Over 98% of our patients have partially or completely recovered their lazy eye vision with the help of the customized vision therapy protocols offered in our clinic.

We invite you to learn more about their experience at the Optisan Clinic on the TESTIMONIALS page.

HOW LONG IT TAKES TO OBSERVE
    FIRST RESULTS OF VISUAL THERAPY?

The first results of vision therapy can appear as early as after the first week of treatment at the clinic, where patients’ visual acuity increases between 5% and 20% (depending on the degree of amblyopia and other patient-related issues).

The specialist then remotely monitors the progress of recovery through home vision therapy and adjusts the parameters of the programme according to performance.

The specialist also works with the patient or his family to conscientiously follow the protocol recommended by the doctor in order to achieve his goal – to recover his sight.

Following the recommendations for regular visits to the Optisan Clinic is essential to the effectiveness of therapy.

Diagnosed with amblyopia or strabismus? Have you been told that nothing more can be done? You want to try vision therapy but don't know what your chances of recovery are.
